The other day, as we were headed to the kids' PE Class (it's SO great- it's at our gym, and it's 3 days a week, and they play so many different fun games with their teacher... the kids love it! Plus then I'm working out 3 days a week for sure, since they're already there and I may as well be too!)... anyways, we're headed to PE, and we see a cloud of thick black smoke coming from what looks to be very close to my dad's dental office (very close to our gym too). So we decided that we didn't mind being a few minutes late to PE to check out where the fire is coming from. We get there, and it's coming from an SUV that's parked outside of a daycare center. There were firefighters literally putting the fire out as we drove up. The kids were SO into it. We watched as they finished putting out the fire, and even broke into the windows to get into the back of the SUV. There was a crowd by now. Dane wanted SO badly to walk up to one of the firefighters and see what had happened. He really wanted more details. So I told them they could go ask the police man who was directing traffic (because at this point, there really wasn't any)... he got a kick out of our older 3 kids running up and confidently asking what happened. He told them to ask the woman firefighter who was putting the hose away. They did, and she said the engine got too hot and started on fire.
So there you have it, a real life event happening right near our house- that the kids were able to check out, without us worrying about being late somewhere. We were right where we needed to be for school that day, watching a car fire get put out.
That's one nice thing about homeschooling... there's not a super strict SET agenda, which I quite like. I'm not the kind of homeschool mom that has their kids on a tight schedule, so it leaves room for these kinds of imromptu things to happen. Although I could stand to get a tad bit more organized and structured, but I'm not going to worry about it too much.
It made us think about the kids' Auntie Court Court too, and we talked about how these are the kinds of things she does for her work. It was a pretty cool afternoon. Oh, and the kids did make it for the second half of their PE class, and they had a fun story to tell their teacher! :)
