Dane Starts Kindergarten!

I struggled SO much all summer, and really before that even, with what to do about Dane this school year. He turned 5 on July 24th, so he's a very young 5 year old to be in kindergarten.

We had signed him up for preschool, and figured this year he could do 2 days of preschool and really become a leader as one of the older kids in his class. I didn't want him to be one of the youngest kids in his class all his school days considering a few things. He can tend to be a follower, and really thrives on knowing people like him and have fun with him. Which made me think of what things could be like as he grows up, and choices he may make as one of the younger ones in his class looking for approval.

Plus he's on the smaller side (for now), and I didn't want him feeling self counscious about that either. Also, Kindergarten at Joy is full day, and there's no option for half day. I really didn't feel like Dane was ready for full day. And not only that, but I wasn't mentally ready for him to be gone from me every day all day! So, this extra year could be really beneficial for him, so we'd planned to wait on kindergarten until next year.

Then I talked to my wonderful sister, Julie, who teaches 1st grade at a school near us. She suggested we try half day kindergarten at her school, and she even said she could take him to school each day. Bonus! For me, with 4 kids, and the possibility of having 2 of them at different schools, this was a huge deal. Plus I loved the idea of him only being there for a few hours each day. Enough to get him around other kids, learning his letters and reading, and just preparing him for full day kindergarten next year at Joy.

So that's the plan. He's now in half day kindergarten, and we will be putting him in full day kindergarten next year at Joy. He's excited because next year he gets to bring his lunch to school. :)

He's enjoying school, and of course his favorite parts are his friends and recess. No surprise there! He's a great friend, and he's come home a few times telling us he gave away his shirts to his friends. Let me explain a bit. He is always cold, so even when it was REALLY hot, he was wearing pants and sometimes even bringing an extra jacket or long sleeve shirt. The first time it happened with his first friend he had at school who he realized he was going to move away. So Dane gave him his long sleeve cars shirt, so that he'd remember him.

We tried to tell him to maybe draw him a picture or ask mommy or daddy next time before we give our clothes away.... then the next time it was because he was playing with his other really good friend, and he was trying to throw sand over him, and of course, it went right into his eyes. He felt bad, so he gave him his jacket so he wouldn't be sad or mad at him. His friends mom sent the jacket back to school the next day. :) We had another talk about giving our clothes away. He does have quite a big heart, and he also doesn't like knowing others wouldn't be happy with him.

He is doing really well with his letters, writing, and he's even reading a little! He's coloring like a rock star too. He loves movies, acting, singing, and playing with his friends and brothers and sisters. We're thankful for our Daney. He brings life, color, and fun to our lives. Here's a picture of him last year on his first day of preschool and then one of this year on his first day of kindergarten!

He went right over to play in the sand with the boys... he actually has a boy from his preschool class in kindergarten with him. Small world!
Then later this week, he started in an acting class that we found near us. It's through an organization called Moetzart Productions, and he's in the Mini Moez class for 5-9 year olds. It was about 10 weeks long, and there they teach the kids about acting, staging, and it's a ton of fun. It's once a week for 2 hours, and here he is on his first day. He was excited, and a little nervous because he wasn't sure what to expect! He had a GREAT first day, and learned lots of fun new games. His teacher, Mrs. Chick is awesome!
